Uploaded Club Records for August 2010
63rd Australian National Archery Championships. This report also appears in Archery Action magazine. The Championships were held in Brisbane from the 16th – 21st May 2010 and hosted by South Queensland Archery Society. Target and Field events were shot at Mt Petrie Bowmen target grounds and SQAS field course at the Belmont Shooting complex at Belmont. The clout event was shot at the Grange Company of Target Archers field at Samford. 175 archers attended the event from all over Australia and New Zealand. In excess of 66 000 arrows were shot during practice and tournament. It was a unique event in that there were a number of firsts. It was the first time that online registration was made available for competitors to register and pay. Approximately 75% of registrants entered online. The damage electronic scoring system was used successfully for scoring on the target competition field. As a result this part of the competition ran smoothly and ahead of schedule with less administrative headaches at the end when dealing with the scorecards and getting results posted quickly. The electronic scoring system also allowed us to post interim results onto the website within 15 minutes of the completion of each distance. We used the Ianseo scoring system for the target, field and clout events. This allowed us to get the scores collated quickly and easily at the end of the each days competition. We were getting the final results for the day posted onto the website before 4pm. We had live web streaming on the 4th day of the competition and maxed out the band width available to us by early afternoon. There was a maximum of 146 people viewing online – this with no advertising that this would be available which was very satisfying. Of course an event of this nature does not “just happen”. 1000 volunteer hours are donated just during the week of the tournament with approximately 30 people per day working in the canteen, working as field crew, administrating and officiating. Another 3000 volunteer hours were devoted to getting venues and fields in order as well as planning meetings along with the administration of entries and associated information. At the end of the day it is very satisfying to organise a successful event. And the reason for the event is the archers. Personal bests were achieved. 114 new Australian records were posted over the week of competition. 5 archers in the masters (50+) categories set 8 world records. And at the then end of the week, archers and volunteers went home with warm thoughts of success.
About Us, About ArcheryThe Grange Company of Target Archers Inc started in 1947 and is the oldest archery club in Queensland. We are no longer at Emerson Park, The Grange. The club has recently moved to new home grounds and now operates a target field and indoor facility at Samford Archery Park in the Samford Parklands just north of Samford Village. To get there if coming from the Ferny Grove direction, drive to Samford and turn right (north) at the round-about travel, through the village and about 500m north of the village turn in on the left at the old CSIRO glasshouses (now a council depot) and follow the signs to the large shed which is our indoor facility. See "Map to GCTA" in the menu on the left for an interactive map. We also use a field course at Closeburn which is about 10 minutes further north. The club invites memberships from a range of abilities and memberships range from 9 years to eighty plus. Archery is a sport that almost anyone can participate in, including many disabled. You don’t have to have any particular physical attribute to become good at the sport so come along and have a go...its great fun and the company is very friendly! Archery can be enjoyed at a social level, as a self-improvement discipline or for the competitively minded at club, state, national, international and Olympic level. Monthly Indoor Medal (MIM)
Next Monthly Indoor Medal night is 18 August. In 2010 the Indoor Facility is open each Wednesday evening from 18.30. The first Wednesday of the month has a national Qualification and Ranking Event (QRE) listed. Commencing the 3rd Wednesday evening in February (17.02.10) we will be running a monthly indoor medal. The MIM will be based on a handicap system. Archers wishing to participate will need to shoot 3 scores which will be used to establish your initial handicap. So please shoot 3 x Fita Indoor Rounds (60 arrows each at 18m) as soon as you can and submit your score sheets in the usual way but mark them that they are for rating your handicap for the MIM. Next Indoor QRE is 4 August.
Archery Induction and Beginners Course
The next beginners course starts 31 July at Samford. New members should be aware that beginners on a course always have preference for hire gear, but once they have their gear allocated you are free to get out hire gear for yourself. We have recently acquired more bows so there should be no shortage.
Coaching
From now on we plan to run intermediate coaching every Saturday we have coaches available 9.00 to 11.00ish at the indoor.
